Default Announcement: DStv Compact and Extra customers to get DStv Catch Up

DStv Compact and Extra customers to get the popular DStv Catch Up service

DStv Compact and Extra customers will soon have access to DStv’s best entertainment when it’s most convenient to them. From 1 November, DStv Compact and Extra customers with Exploras will receive the popular DStv Catch Up service. Previously this service was only available to DStv Premium customers.

DStv Catch Up allows customers to ‘catch up’ on their favourite series, movies, documentaries and sports events when it suits them. It’s a great way to not miss a single second of entertainment and to discover the great content available on DStv. A selection of the most popular shows - like Isibaya, The Road and Generations, as well as a selection of the best soccer and other sporting highlights is automatically sent to customers' DStv Exploras - ready and waiting for them to watch whenever they have the time.

Up to 150 hours of the best entertainment will be made available and all of the Catch Up content is in crystal clear high definition. The content on DStv Catch Up is linked to the DStv package of the customer, eg DStv Compact customers will see content available on DStv Compact.

“We always look for opportunities to enhance the viewing experience of our customers and we want to give them access to cutting-edge services and products. It is for this reason that we constantly introduce new technologies and enhance our existing services. Offering Catch Up to our DStv Extra and Compact customers with DStv Exploras is just one of the ways we are doing this,” said Mark Rayner, COO MultiChoice South Africa.

DStv Compact and Extra customers with active Exploras will receive a software update in the next week which will enable the Catch Up service. Content will start downloading from 1 November and will build up to the 150 hours over time.

More information about the DStv Catch Up is available on DStv.com

DStv Catch Up is only available to DStv Compact and Extra customers with a DStv Explora. Older model decoders can simply not cope with the software upgrades needed to make DStv Catch Up available on multiple packages.

At a later stage (before the end of the year hopefully), we'll make access to DStv Now and our online streaming available to DStv Compact and Extra customers with any active PVR. This will of course only be to content related to your specific package.

This is probably flogging a dead horse, but is there ever going to be the possibility that those subscribers without a PVR can pay the additional Access Fee and to get the online services? I just don't understand why this isn't an option, especially seeing that Xtraview (which the Access Fee also covers) isn't exclusive to PVR subscribers.

Hi @Citanul - we understand that some of our customers would like to have access to DStv Now even if they don't have a PVR. Unfortunately our content agreements are quite specific in terms of which content we can make available to whom online. So DStv Now is really just an extension of the Catch Up experience on the PVR (like a PVR in your pocket) and as such we can offer that content online to those customers.

I think the answer for you Citanul would be to find a really cheap old SD PVR second-hand, have the Call Centre connect that as the Secondary decoder on XtraView - you may not even need to physically connect it.

Thanks for reporting that - it is fixed. Essentially that link just goes to the press release which we have already included in this thread.

The DStv.com team are busy putting up more info under Self Service that explain the DStv Catch Up service in a bit more detail. But that is the same information that is already available under stickies in the Catch Up section of this Forum.

Your content agreements specifically state decoder models? Why would that be the case?

No, not specific about decoders models - as I said, the agreements are specific about who can access online content. The only way we can offer some (or the majority) of the content online, is as an extension of the Catch Up service. And the only way to prove that we are offering it as such is to restrict it to customers who have access to the Catch Up service.

Offering the content purely online means we then become an online content provider like Netflix and that then falls under the remit of completely new agreements. Very complicated legally but that's the gist of it.
