Well, I cannot contribute any solutions to this problem but would just like to add that I'm pleased nothing more serious occurred. Like the whole house burning down. If that was possible.

Not quite yet

Here's an epilogue for those who helped and others interested.
Disclaimer: I'm going to be intentionally vague about what Jan brought up and discussed with Keith, as it's dangerous to do electrical DIY on this level and NOT ever recommended! Will just refer to that as the "neutral factor".

The problems continued on occasion.
1. We determined that there was a leaky roof problem with the one ceiling light's conduit - that circuit was then isolated until attended to.
2. There were definitely cable theft attempts involved at times.

3. After last night's incident, we had intermittent problems up until Eskom arrived.
This time they checked things here first.
a.) Although not supposed to, they opened the main electric board in our garage to check - all is in order in there, and the neutral factor is safely balanced in the way it's supposed to be.
b.) They found the pole that has our terminal. As we knew (in suspecting it was our pole) the unit's cover had blown off in the wind months ago. The involved circuit breaker was faulty so was replaced, and below is a pic of the badly rusted one terminal (sorry about the lack of focus, after the photo they left with the terminal).
