Default Explora 2A Downloads

Wasn't a whole hallabaloo made with the new compression technology that was built into the Explora 2A? To me the size of digital downloads is just the same both on the Explora and 2A.

That used to be the case, then a few months ago something changed.
I suspect (but don't know) that the new proprietary compression technology was later also added to the Explora 1.

To get an official response if one is available, this thread probably needs to be moved to the PVR Decoders section as the Mods working with decoders just monitor those sections. (But unfortunately "Discussions" is not regularly monitored by any Mods as its our section.)

Now comes the question (if I'm right) - which is then the better Explora?
I still think the Explora 2A, hardware will be improved based on Explora 1 experience.
Still, I'm not rushing out to get one.

Buy a A7 Remote and bam! you have a 2A. The only thing I've seen so far as far as upgrades go is the removal of heartbeat cable in Xtraview environment exclusive to 2As

Yep, just subtle differences.

The choice to do without the HB cable option is not exclusive, just easier as the "diplexer" needed to do that (along with a Smart LNB or a 24-1Z Smart Switch) is built into the 2As

I remember I once opened a thread where I asked those that had the 2A if the experience was worthwhile. Back then I was looking at upgrading my PVR, which I later went to to do.

To think I passed up on a Explora special that was R999 and bought the more expensive 2A and now I'm only left with a remote to show for it. This is sad

Bought a curved TV and a Explora 2A, thank God my wife is not a techno boffin otherwise I would never hear the end of it.

For that amount I would have bought a 3D TV, a Explora and 2 A7 remotes. Dstv I feel cheated

I'm definitely not in any rush to replace my Explora with a 2A.

I really hope the "next version" will have a much larger drive in order to keep certain recordings for longer. My wish list is for at LEAST 4 times current capacity.

A 6GB drive now cost less than a 500MB drive just a few years ago so cost is no excuse. The larger you go the more cost effective it gets. Or make it available with different drive sizes - it's not rocket science and have very little impact on design & manufacturing.

Worldwide online options has made things a little too easy for the Now Generation IMO,
recording is now far too much effort and would actually involve spending time researching the EPG
Far easier to just use CU / CU+...

So good luck with that one Krugie :-/

As for the theory that the new proprietary compression technology was later also added to the Explora 1, nobody seems to have realised the implications of that....
(IF true...)

Double the capacity now on the 1st model Explora!
Has nobody else noticed the lower usage percentages??

(If so, I would think the much older recordings still take up the same space as they originally did.
It also isn't a handicap for the 2A, nothing has changed as far as what it offers goes.)

HUGE apologies if I've got the above wrong, certainly not trying to start any false rumours.
I suggest all keep an eye on this thread just in case opposite official feedback is posted.

But with related incidents I've had on my Explora 1 (they're fortunately not too common), and far worse on the 2U decoder before it, I will rather go for the 2A sometime.
We also don't know how much more capable the 2A is re future plans... ;-)

I'm not holding my breath

The advantage with recordings is that they don't expire though... unless the decoder does...
