Disclaimer: Note that I have no interest in promoting this bank, this is just posted as a helpful tool and there may be other banks offering similar.

Get your Smart ID and Passport at a Standard Bank branch

Standard Bank has partnered with The Department of Home Affairs to launch a more convenient way for you to get your Smart ID and/or your Passport.

You can renew or apply for a new Smart ID and/or Passport online by using the steps below and collect at one of 3 participating Standard Bank branches from Monday to Friday, 09:00 15:30:
  • Canal Walk (CPT)
  • Killarney Mall (JHB)
  • Centurion Branch (PTA)
  • Visit https://ehome.dha.gov.za/echannel to apply or renew your Smart ID and/or Passport by completing the online application form.
  • Log into Standard Bank Internet Banking and pay for your Smart ID and/or Passport application.
  • Once payment is completed, visit one of the branches listed above:
  • To register using your existing South African green bar coded identity document
  • Scan your finger prints and;
  • take new identity or passport photos.
  • You will receive an SMS notification from the Department of Home Affairs to collect your Smart ID/Passport at the Standard Bank branch where you completed your application when it is ready.
*Applications can be made by any South African Standard Bank customer for Passports and South African Standard Bank customers over the age of 16 for the Smart ID.

Seems strange that they don't offer a branch in Durban yet.

Also heard that First National has or had an earlier system, but that didn't work properly for some...

FNB has been offering the service since September 2016. Currently it is also available at Absa and I believe at Nedbank.

Here is the original press release by FNB in September last year.

FNB in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has launched the application of Smart ID and passport (new/ renewal) to the public. Apply online and collect at one of four FNB Branches:
Lynnwood (Grove Shopping Mall)
Centurion Lifestyle
4 Merchant Place
President Street West.

Any queries regarding eChannel applications must be directed to the Department of Home Affairs call center on 0800 60 11 90.

I think the main reason for it being available only in some branches in the major cities is the Home affairs equipment required to process the application

Just visiting to discuss something else highly important (to me)

For anyone else still using Windows XP - don't get a shock if it still offers you an update once in a blue moon...

I had connected someone else's cellphone, which led to another port being activated and that led to the s/w looking for and finding a 2013 driver update

(I think that's how it's done?)
