Default Explora: Intermittent Signal loss on most channels

Hi

Description of issue:
Most of my channels have intermittent signal loss. They display Video and Audio for around 10 seconds and then display the signal lost banner (possibly due to bad weather) for 10~20 seconds. Channels that don't have this issue are 101, 203, 124.
If I view the Signal Strength/Quality whilst on a broken channel it shows Strength 42%/Quality 60~80% and then loses lock.

Description of installation:
We stay in an apartment block with 4 units. There is a single dish with a quad lnb that is fed into a 16 port switch/amplifier. I take 4 cables to my explora smart switch and then 1 cable from the switch (located outside my unit near the dish) to my explora (around 20m of cable).

My installation has been working fine for over a year until recently when I suspect there was some work done for another unit which has disrupted my installation.
I have taken the Explora to a nearby DSTV branch and it worked fine.
I have also tried resetting to factory defaults and it can scan all the channels but then they do not work.

Where could the fault be?
Is it possible that the smart switch has been damaged?

The issue seems similar to this report: https://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...-at-night-only
But mine happens all the time...

Welcome to posting, it won't be related to a night-only issue which generally was a specific problem with a few batches of Smart LNB's (SLNB) or would be a temperature related fault.

This is the kind of thing that must be checked by your Body Corporate or their representative installer, there's little else you can do other than make sure all the connections and your side of the cabling is in good condition.

Which transponder/s are those channels on Optimist?

I posted a reply which has disappeared into the ether for some reason.

I presume you are referring to the 24-1Z MS? Or is this the Explora switch version 5-1 or 2?

A decoder will lose lock if the strength drops below 60%. There must be some serious issues introduced by the other installation work that was done, probably on the 16 port switch/amplifier. Any idea of the model number and make?

You would need to get the incoming feeds to that switch checked out for signal strength and quality. I doubt it is the decoder of the MS that is faulty.

If you have access to a simple FSM s used by the camping community, you could check the values on each incoming feed to the 24-1Z switch or on the 4 outputs at the bottom of the 24-1Z.

Thanks Optimist and Geoff for the quick replies, I'll have to get somebody in to have a look then.

As a side note - I had a look at the box outside where all the switches are located and it get's really hot in there with the 4 x smart switches and the 16 port.
Could the switch be overheating?

A picture of the box with the 16 port amp and 4 switches would be nice!

Have you checked with your neighbors? Maybe they are all having the same issue?

it sounds like one of the ports on the multiswitch might be faulty , if you know which is your DStv switch than you could try changing the incoming ports of the DStv switch.
recommended is to contact the installer who looks after the property who usually has a contract with the body coorperate of the complex and have them take a look, changing or fiddeling would void thier workmanship warrenty

Just want to expand on this point - at the moment we all use the "H/L" and "V/L" ports, so given what you posted you could try switching those 2 cables with the other 2.
This is just a fault finding exercise for passing on here / to the BC / installer, as if it does then work well enough it would later become a problem again when new "Hi Band" services are also launched.
