The quality of the transferred content being the same as the original , or SD ?

I do remember it being announced that the Service Centres can now transfer content, or harddrives, under certain conditions. The details are a bit foggy still but we'll work it out if Forumites give feedback when trying to have it done. Doubt an agency can do it.

The confusion you're having Luke is that that's a separate process to what we can do ourselves - only copy to an external device and via standard RF & composite outputs, and not to another MC decoder, and only in SD.

The options available, personally and via the service centre, remains confusing to me, sorry

Can't speak more re Service Centres' assistance, but here's clarity re what can be done with our own efforts (I use it quite often so am certain);
  • Any decoder's live, buffered or recorded content can be copied to an external recording device from RF out or composite (AV) out.
  • If recorded content on the decoder it can only be copied externally once.
  • No CU, CU+ or BO content can be copied under any circumstances.
  • HDMI connections will never allow copying.
  • MC decoder USB connections can't assist.
  • There is no way for us to copy any external content back onto a MC decoder.
Will try to answer any questions.

Clarified thanks, if by external recording device PVR is implied (as per MoM's post). That would mean that I can transfer some of my recordings from my 4P to my Explora , albeit in SD then.
The only question then remaining is the (potential) ability of the service centres to transfer content in the same quality as the source, or will they be limited to the same transfer options as what we are ?

No, you still haven't quite got it;

So you yourself can copy to a video machine, or another privately bought device such as a DVR (digital video recorder), but never back to another MC decoder / harddrive.

They are able to do more elaborate transfers, in other words they can transfer HD content. There has been some past feedback confirming this.

To clarify what I said earlier about the subject - I'm not sure if they ever physically transfer the actual harddrive when it is in good enough condition, or just the content.
Also, doubt it could ever be done between different types of decoders.

Ok, so MoM's post (#10) was about the ability of the service centres to transfer between PVRs, not us humans ?

The nearest branch to you would either be the one in Randburg or in Pretoria (addresses on DStv.com). Best to take it to a branch instead of an agency, who will not always help. Agencies are independent businesses who have a contract with MultiChoice for service and installation, whereas our branches are staffed by MultiChoice employees.
