Default SuperSport scores major UEFA Euro football rights across Sub-Saharan Africa

SuperSport scores major UEFA Euro football rights across Sub-Saharan Africa

Johannesburg, June 19 - SuperSport has scored broadcast rights on all platforms (including television, internet and mobile) to an array of major international football, including the UEFA Euro 2020 Championship as well as the UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifiers and the European qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

In addition, there’s another jewel in the football crown with the all-new UEFA Nations League, a new competition to be contested by the national teams of the 55 member associations of UEFA, also signed by SuperSport.

These acquisitions guarantee major European football for each season from 2018 through to 2022.

The rights are for exclusive broadcast in South Africa and non-exclusive in the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa and the adjacent islands.

“UEFA is happy to continue and further strengthen its relationship with Supersport,’’ said Guy-Laurent Epstein, Managing Director Marketing at UEFA Events SA. “Supersport is a long-standing UEFA partner and we are confident SuperSport will deliver great coverage and promotion of the UEFA 2018-2022 national team football portfolio to fans across Sub-Saharan Africa and exclusively in South Africa."

UEFA Euro 2020, in particular, is shaping as a milestone event given that it will celebrate the 60th birthday of the European championship and will, unusually, be held in 13 cities in 13 different European countries.

The European qualifiers will also offer high-quality action as 55 teams chase down 24 spots available for the championship. This will be played from March 2019 to March 2020.

“These are tremendous acquisitions,” said Gideon Khobane, chief executive of SuperSport. “The European championship traditionally energises our viewers who thrive on watching the superstars in unrelenting competition. The UEFA Nations League is bound to develop an avid following, too, and SuperSport looks forward to adding this to our already substantial football offering.”

Yes. Me for one. Very pleased MC has acquired to rights to the European Qualifiers. Something we haven't got for this current period.

"In addition, there’s another jewel in the football crown with the all-new UEFA Nations League, a new competition to be contested by the national teams of the 55 member associations of UEFA, also signed by SuperSport." First I've even heard of this competition so don't know what sides will be participating but it should be good viewing for those of us who follow football.

Thank you MC.

Good news IF you like football.

Not so good if you like any other sport, as this will mean even more airtime devoted to football, not to mention the fact that there is only a limited pot of money, and more of that has now gone to football to the detriment of other sports.

Possibly the additional channels will absorb these and not prejudice non-soccer fans?

Also never heard of UEFA Nations league...Googling straight away. I reckon we need to set up a SuperBru competition for the qualifiers so we don't get bored during international breaks? Sandtonman?

He's back in the "UK" (Greece at the moment), here sometimes but I doubt looking at new threads - maybe send him a PM.

I don't really think these right will impact on other channels/sports - even with 6 live games at the same time there are still 6 other channels left and (with my limited soccer knowledge) - a lot of these games would even potentially be played midweek when not much else is happening live.

Just on a side-note though (bit off-topic - sorry), we are actually LOOSING one SuperSport channel - not gaining anything - just fewer repeats hopefully.

Currently we have Blitz, SS1 to SS9, Select, SS12 & 2 x event channels for overflow - 14 channels in total. When the changes take place we will have Blitz, SS1 to S10 and then SS11 & SS12 as overflow channels - so 13 channels in total. We are in effect loosing SS7 with SS12 content moving to SS7. Will will have SS8 & SS9 in HD though and we are also getting GINX (although not a SS Channel) so I recon better off in general.

Nah, it was only one overflow channel most of the time and the few amount of hours broadcast doesn't count enough to make it real channel(s)
