Default SD Content on an HD Channel

This issue is raising its ugly head again. So easily solved if the little HD icon is removed from the EPG.

Show : Interceptor Force
Channel : 140
Date/Time : 21h45 24 May 2017
Issues : SD passed off as HD; 4:3 broadcast pillarboxed in 16:9

Hello

Thanks for reporting, we will take up the issue with e.tv. The EPG tag is based on the channel, so an HD channel will always show an HD tag. Our Content department will look into this.

I would, humbly, suggest that that is a mistake. The HD tag should possibly default to HD on an HD channel, but there are examples (as I've shown) where SD content is shown on an HD channel. We've had graphic overlays before, which I think are a bit of overkill. The solution is for the HD tag to be removed (or replaced with SD) for SD content.

After all, if the HD tag is always there for an HD channel, why bother with the tag?

Hello

We are working with e.tv to have content correctly flagged on the EPG. Thanks for reporting.

In the case of Studio Universal, where movies are not available for broadcast in HD, they upscale movies to 720p.

My TV upscales SD content too. This has been discussed at length and agreed. If the source content is not HD, then it's not HD. Period.

I have no problem with SD content on an otherwise HD channel, but I do expect one of the following.
  • HD Icon removed from EPG (Good)
  • HD Icon replaced with SD Icon (Better)
  • On screen notification (meh)

@Simon, I have discussed this with the platform team and they will discuss it with the channels who provide the info that goes into the EPG.
