Default PRESS RELEASE: Get three independent DStv viewing environments under one subscription

Get three independent DStv viewing environments under one subscription

MultiChoice has now made it possible for customers to watch different live TV shows in three separate rooms at the same time. DStv customers can now connect three decoders, using MultiChoice’s XtraView service. The good news is you only pay one subscription fee plus an R85 Access Fee for each XtraView connection (so 2 x R85).

“We want to equip our customers to have a great entertainment experience in their homes. The ability to connect three decoders under one subscription gives our customers more flexibility to create a set up that suits their family,” commented Mark Rayner, CEO for MultiChoice South Africa.

DStv customers must use a DStv Explora decoder as their primary decoder, and then link any combination of Exploras or DStv HD decoders in this three decoder arrangement. We recommend customers use an accredited DStv installer for their set up.

More information about XtraView and specials on the DStv Explora and DStv HD decoders can be found on DStv.com.

Important Information
• The decoders, which can be used when linking 3 together in XtraView, are a combination of the DStv Explora and the DStv HD Decoder. The primary decoder in this XtraView set-up MUST be a DStv Explora.
• The decoders, which can be used when linking 2 together in XtraView, are a combination of 11 series single view decoders, DStv HD Decoder, SD PVR, HD PVRs (all models) and the DStv Explora. Please check website for allowable combinations.
• We recommend the use of a DStv Accredited Installer for all XtraView installations.
• The recommended installation for XtraView set-ups is a DStv Smart LNB together with an 80cm satellite dish.
• When linking decoders in XtraView, all decoders get all the channels a customer is subscribed to. Example: if a customer is subscribed to DStv Premium and DStv Indian, they’ll get all those channels on all decoders.
• Each decoder operates independently. Example: if a customer rents a movie on a PVR in their XtraView set-up, it will only be available for viewing on that one decoder. Similarly, recordings made on one decoder will only be accessible on that decoder.

About the R85 Access Fee
The Access Fee gives our customers access to more than one viewing environment without having to pay additional subscriptions. It’s also flexible enough to cater for the unique needs of our customers’ households.

Two independent viewing environments:
If a customer wants to watch different live TV shows in two separate rooms at the same time, they can connect two decoders through XtraView and pay an R85 Access Fee.

Three independent viewing environments:

If a customer wants to watch different live TV shows in three separate rooms at the same time, they can now connect three decoders through XtraView and pay an additional R85 Access Fee for the second XtraView connection. This means, they pay two R85 Access Fees.

Decoders that can be used in the a 3-decoder set up
The primary decoder has to be a DStv Explora, which can be combine with another Explora or a DStv HD decoder.
Older decoder models are not capable of the technical changes required to run three decoders in XtraView.

I think this needs more detail - besides the Primary which must be an Explora, one can have either 2 x secondary 4136 Single View HD Decoders, or 2 x secondary Exploras, or 1 x a secondary Explora and 1 x a secondary 4136 Single View HD Decoder.

At long last, a feasible replacement for the SD PVR combined with another decoder.

BUT (there is always a but with MC), and one has to read right to the bottom of the press release to get the bad news .....

(1)Cost:

Quote:
The good news is you only pay one subscription fee plus an R85 Access Fee for each XtraView connection (so 2 x R85).
So its going to cost you an extra R 85.00 a month to make use of this feature. On the older decoders, one could end up with view 3 and record 4 for one additional R 85.00 per month ...

(2) Which decoders?

Quote:
The decoders, which can be used when linking 3 together in XtraView, are a combination of the DStv Explora and the DStv HD Decoder.

This means you cannot combine ANY of the older decoders into a 3-decoder mix under XV!. So IF you go this way, that is it, throw away all your older PVRs and single view decoders....

(3) The BUT at the end of the Press release:

Quote:
Older decoder models are not capable of the technical changes required to run three decoders in XtraView.

At least we now understand the reason for the new SLNB model LMX 501. 3 decoders, 3 ports. Very little chance of also equipping an antenna for reception of "other" services beyond what one can squeeze out of a single LNB port.

Sorry MC, not going to influence me in any way to move forward .....

Hi, we don't supply that detail and recommend that you chat to your local DStv Accredited Installer.

@Peanut, what usually happens is that Forumites start to assemble info themselves and work out the details.
MC have always accepted this on the forum as DIY is something that will always be a component of the choices South Africans make, but as I think I understand it they must try keep things as professional as possible for all parties concerned.
A few of us know accredited installers so it won't be long...

I'll have to sit this one out for personal reasons, unfortunate timing but looking forward to catching up with it later :-)

Already have accessed quite a bit of info ..... As usual, these things are supposed to be big secret but it always leaks out anyway ....
