MTV officially opens its doors to DStv Extra and Compact customers on Monday 25 August at 21:00 CAT with the primetime premiere of the channel’s flagship awards show, the 2014 MTV Video Music Video Awards in association with Sprite, powered by MTN (red carpet show begins 20:00 CAT). Guaranteed to dominate the agenda around the water cooler and on social media, performers at this year’s awards include Beyoncé, Maroon 5, Usher, Ariana Grande and 5 Seconds of Summer.
A key element of the schedule is hit reality series Geordie Shore (Season 8), airing Tuesdays at 21:15 CAT; this series sees the arrival of two “mint” new male house members, while a trip to Iceland adds to the usual hook-ups, breakups and drama of the lads and lasses from Newcastle.
Acclaimed MTV scripted series Faking It launches on Wednesday 27 August at 21:15 CAT; this smart new drama has been a ratings winner in the US thanks to its unusual and thought-provoking premise: what happens when you pretend to be someone you aren’t? In this case, high school friends Amy and Karma are mistakenly outed as lesbians, and use their new-found status to access the cool set who had previously shunned them. But what if one of them is not pretending as much as the other…?
Riveting new documentary strand Virgin Territories sees MTV follow the journeys of 15 young people as they share their different opinions, thoughts and experiences about virginity, in a bid to take away some of the stereotypes that surround being a virgin or not being a virgin. Virgin Territories premieres on MTV on Thursday 11 September at 20:30 CAT.
In keeping with MTV’s proud music heritage, music will continue to be a core element of the schedule, providing a showcase for international and South Africa rock, pop, EDM and more. Key music strands include a new weekly showcase for South African music and artists, Jou Ma Se MTV, airing Saturday at 11:15 CAT from 30 August.
