Default Colour buttons on remote

I have dstv compact and none of the colour buttons on the remote seems to do anything. Is there a way to program them?

The colour buttons are really for us with the PVR and are quick-links to thinks like BoxOffice (Green), slow mo (White), etc. Am sure the more technically-minded forumites and moderators will give you a more detailed explanation than my layman's one.

It was a dark and stormy night.
(But because his installation was sound, his DStv reception was perfect.)

Marietjie's spot on. The fact that you're on a compact bouquet implies that you don't have a PVR, although it's quite possible to have a compact bouquet with a SD PVR. The colour buttons perform functions that are exclusive to PVRs and relate to setting and viewing of recordings, DOD and Box Office.

What MoM (MC Marietjie) says is more or less it, if you don't have a PVR type decoder there's only basic functions they're used for, here's a short list:

Depending on which non-PVR decoder you've got;

Red - Can be used to work the same as the Alt. button, toggling between the last two channels you were watching.
Blue - Audio / Language options.
White - (Nothing I've seen.)
Yellow - Used for displaying date & time, or toggling the adding or removing of channels from the Favourites Bouquet if that bouquet is available on your decoder.
Green - Can make your screen go blank, push once or twice more to correct (used for "SCART" non-satellite inputs at the back, but doesn't work on all decoders).

what no one seems to mention is that on some PVR decoders, the decoder does not always know what to do when you press one of the colour buttons as well

I've made some corrections to the above info.

Perhaps those PVR decoders have been made colour-blind.

BTW, congrats on your upcoming 9000th post, a monumental effort!!
Have to wonder if the forum s/w will be able to handle it when you add another digit...

That statement kinda contradicts your user name of "Optimist"
