Default DSTV FORUM: FAQs, Forum Usage

@ MoM,

Optimist and myself have both noticed of late that newcomers to the forum are battling to find out how to do things, such as send PMs, understanding how the forum works, how to post, subscribe to threads, etc.

We then noticed that the links to these sections are now no longer easy to find anywhere on the home page or anywhere else for that matter.

It looks like all these things disappeared at the last Forum Upgrade.

So how about getting this fixed?

For those of you interested, below are the links Optimist found and are still available IF you know where to look for them.

The main FAQ page: http://forum.dstv.com/faq.php
The Board FAQ page: http://forum.dstv.com/faq.php?faq=vb3_board_faq
The Board usage page: http://forum.dstv.com/faq.php?faq=vb3_board_usage

The FAQs have all been updated and are available at the top of every thread. The ones you are referring to are outdated which is why they were archived with the old Forum.

Much general forum usage info is in those older FAQs, not in the new stickies, and would never expire.

I cannot agree at all, the general usage rules are not available easily, nor are the instructions of how to send PMs etc.

I also cannot see the links to the FAQs you say at the top of each thread either ... Those FAQs are specific to that particular thread and DO NOT deal with forum usage at all.

Please explain by way of example, how will a newcomer find out how to post a PM for example.

What we are talking about here is what every other bulletin board has and that is a section of FAQs and help dealing HOW the forum works, WHAT facilities are available and the like.

How can you possibly say that a section on what to do when a member loses/forgets his password is outdated?

Further to my previous post,

If there was a sticky somewhere entitled " Frequently asked Questions about using the forum", that at least would be better than what we have now, which is nothing on forum usage which incidentally is also not about the legal rules, that is an entirely separate matter.

If you like the FAQs that have been archived are a part of a manual of how to use the forum. ...

Case in point. How in the hell do you turn off the auto-subscribe to threads feature? I cannot find such a setting at all, and my mailbox is getting a touch bombarded at present with mails telling me there are replies in threads I've subscribed to.

Ok...I just found it. But it's thread specific, and I want the default to be do not subscribe?

Hi Orange it's per the attached pic.
If I remember correctly when I selected "no email notifications" myself, years ago, it started working for ALL future threads to which I subscribed , but it did not affect existing subscribed threads for which I needed to unsubscribe individually.

Cheers, K.

Look under "control panel", Edit options, Message and notifications, and check that the default is "Do not subscribe".

It may help .....

Orange, go to your User CP (Control Panel) at the top, then click on Edit Options - it's in that long list, 5th item from the top.
Don't forget to click on Save Changes at the bottom afterwards.

Thanks all. I actually did find it myself just after posting (but had to look quite hard for it). And since I've had more than a decade of forum software exposure, if I battled to find it, then people new to the system are going to really battle.

Which illustrates your point quite well I think?
