Part 2 -"The Madness Continues."

Welcome Forumites to only Officially sanctioned Off-Topic Thread of The Forum.
Here You can be yourself and reveal that you are Really crazy[Cough]I mean you Eurica!{cough].

As with In Live you will Find Party Poopers that will ruining your Experience and inflict Damage on Others.
For That Reason The Lounge Has Rules.

Rules

1. No discussion about MC, its services or its products etc - the Mods won't (on the whole) be keeping an eye on this thread.
2. For standard day-to-day interests only, no illegal activities / discussions, politics, religion or the like, and demographics should only be touched on fleetingly. Also I suggest let's keep tech, sport, TV viewing etc. to a minimum as there are already sections for all of that.
3. Cyber-bullies beware - I am your enemy. :(
4. I will be monitoring the thread for the Mods, even if "I'm not around" ;)
I suggest all be involved in this process equally. I would initially like to also "deputise" @Eurica. Any problem post(s) will be reported by clicking on the red triangle button in the top right corner of each post. (But if we make a nuisance of ourselves with that...)
5. Please be tolerant, we all come from many different walks of life. Also, what is of interest to ladies may not be to gentlemen and visa-versa, please be patient with others' interests.
6. Remember, this Forum has no age restriction, be careful what you post about. And being first and foremost a business Forum, let's try keep it "gentle".
7. Do not post this kind of discussion anywhere else but in this one thread.

Lets all Ponder this ;) this while we wait for Eurica to give a Topic about astronomy.
Even though man has studied the heavens for thousands of years, we still know very little about the Universe we live in. And as we continue to learn more, we are consistently amazed, and sometimes confused, by what we learn.

I don't know anything about astronomy. Sorry. :o

Astronomy is a natural science that is the study of celestial objects (such as moons, planets, stars, nebulae, and galaxies), the physics, chemistry, mathematics, and evolution of such objects, and phenomena that originate outside the atmosphere of Earth, including supernovae explosions, gamma ray bursts, and cosmic background radiation. A related but distinct subject, cosmology, is concerned with studying the universe as a whole.
All wrong! I love my little car. Had a stupid car for almost 10 years. So when I got this one 3 years back I was very happy.

Optimist 2014-01-10 14:40

My old car didn't have a gender specific name. It was an old Honda Ballade 1500 that was souped-up, so called it Honcorde (Honda + Concorde :D)

Even had a fancy chrome sign made that we designed... that's how you learn to think after spending nearly 2 years in Bloem :p (army)

My newer car has a sexy Russian name, all details of which I will keep private else someone here might recognise me and report my (sometimes) fast (but careful) driving out of spite, let's just call her... nice

Congrats MC Nic!

I really don't know what to do anymore. It is not a big complex I live in but there must be 5000 dogs and they never stop barking. How can the owners not be going crazy like me? The main instigator is my left side neighbour's dog but the owner is also the chairman(lady?) so if you say anything she makes your life a living hell. Complaint letter about everything.

Birds and monkeys? Sounds like my right side neighbours. :p Those are the people with the Afrikaans music and diesel bakkie. I'm sure I've complained about them before? Or maybe that was on twitter.

Where to begin...

Had to look up mongoose on Google. Did not know what that was, Cute. Better than a idling diesel bakkie blaring out Steve songs any day.

My sister just "inherited" a parrot. All I can say is good luck with that.

I like my cat but 18?!? Who has the money for that? The people at PicknPay where I go everyday knows - like me that you buy more cat food than human food. Those things are always hungry. Like teenagers.

Nope, not even a canary. Had a dog, bullterrier, years ago but after we had to put her down decided that we wouldn't get another one. We do have a number of pigeons that have made a home in one of our trees though, so perhaps that counts?

Saw somewhere recently that someone has a problem with their neighbour's dogs barking all the time. Don't know why this person is complaining as the neighbour only has SIXTY dogs.

JeanP, I'm going to sound stupid now but what or who is TMZ? :o

Optimist, the lady you followed into the P'nP shop must have been some looker? ;)Or are you just easily distracted?

Optimist 2014-01-16 07:19

Knowing me it was probably a problem on TV that had my attention BB. ;)

Talking of celeb gossip, who are our favourite stars?
(In my case, anyone who plays a role in Star Trek :p)

Geoff D 2014-01-16 08:12

My most disliked actors list has:

Schuster
The oke who makes the "the tooth fairy" adds
Steve Martin
Woody Allen
That Murphy oke
Van Damme

Optimist 2014-01-16 08:52

Agree with some of that, I'll add some other pet dislikes;

Hugh Grant (occasionally ok though)
Chuck Norris of Walker Texas Ranger fame
The lady who played "Lucy" in the original Dallas series (we called her "poison dwarf")
Steven Seagal

JeanP 2014-01-16 09:24

Back to Star Trek yes i do like the cast in the new movie

JeanP 2014-01-16 09:25

there is a very long list of actors and actresses i like cant write them all out. PS Nobody Likes Chuck Norris anymore

Geoff D 2014-01-16 09:40

Yes the "like" list is too long -- but my list includes

"Ursula U(A)ndress"

JeanP 2014-01-16 09:54

i'm sorry don't know much about her except that she was the first bond girl with her famous walk up the beach scene:eek::p

beetle bailey 2014-01-16 11:31

Along with those already mentioned I'd add Jim Carrey. Tom Cruise? Neither like nor dislike him. Pleased to see that I'm not the only one who dislikes Leon Schuster.

JeanP 2014-01-16 11:43

beetle bailey 2014-01-17 11:10

Still on the "movie" type topic but what I hate is when the actors whisper something to each other in the movie and the sound is so soft that you cannot hear what they are saying and you have to turn the sound up. Then, in the same film when there's some action, you have to go and turn the sound down because you get blasted out of your seat.

Realism is one thing but it would be better if the sound was better controlled at source. I'm only talking about films on our tv screens as I've not been to the cinema for quite some time now.

gman7 2014-01-17 11:45

So true. As only my wife and i watch TV together(kids in the room watching there Disney stuff) i purchased Philips cordless infra red earphones. They work perfectly. Excellent sound nothing missed(wispering included) and we disturb nobody(live in a complex so bit of an issue)

I know earphones are not everyones favourite, but i recently watched the new Star Trek on Blu Ray 3D with earphones on full tilt. Seriously the best experience i have had in ages(even better than in the cinema):D

And with that I'm guessing your wife and mother-in-law don't have access to these forums? ;)Question here is was it the sound problem with DStv or with the aforesaid two people that caused you to go out and purchase the earphones? :)

Am I the only one who when watching a movie, series or sports show on the tv doesn't want to enter into conversations with anyone and prefers silence from those around him?

Sorry I had to go for a moment. Family had to come and shower here cause the taps has been dry in their part of Bloem for a while now.
In Bloem we don't have load shedding, we have water sharing.
Amazing what the human can get used to. No electricity ok. No water ok.:eek:

Hey E, despite having the 70D camera, the on on-board-phone camera hardware is becoming extremely good. Coupled to that, there is an amazing free Android camera app called "a better camera" I'd suggest you download and try it. I'm using it on my Galaxy S3s when I don't want to drag my reflex camera; which is most of the time.

I also use a simple, free tool to edit my pics. Way more simple and useful than Photoshop; It's called Google Picasa. I took your published pic and used Picasa to enhance it and have attached the result. It took less than a minute. You can really see now how the Bloem stadium flood-lamps light up the sky!

Cheers, K.

I really just to improve my existing one - I thought was good enough, but it's turned out not to be. I do have an alarm, but by chance they picked the one room that doesn't have an infrared sensor and they got in my removing an entire pane of glass from a window which doesn't open - if they'd opened any of the windows then the alarm would have gone off.

JeanP 2014-02-06 10:21

Optimist 2014-02-06 10:30

It's a scary situation, so sorry to hear you've also been targeted Citanul. :(

We had 2 attempted break-ins in the last few months, both late at night. Inaccessible infra-red heat motion sensors seems the only way to (hopefully) stop it, and making access very difficult in case they're still "brave" enough. Terrible lifestyle.
PS hope the insurance doesn't take too long
It probably won't. I go through a broker who's pretty good at liaising with the insurance companies. So all I need to is send him a list of the stolen items and he'll take care of rest.

The only two big items that were taken were my laptop and an external hard drive (which just had episodes of TV shows on it, so it's not like it was anything vitally important). Luckily I backed up all my important documents onto a flash drive at the moment, so I didn't lose anything that really mattered. There were a few other things taken, but they were mostly things that I hadn't used in years but still had (including an old laptop), so replacing what was lost isn't going to be too much of a big deal.

beetle bailey 2014-02-06 11:44

What I'm about to say won't cheer Citanul up but think it needs to be said.

A couple of years ago my place was broken into. Nothing much was stolen then either but it would seem that sometimes the first break in also allows the burglars a chance to see what is available. These %^%$^&&*( then came back a week later and, if they weren't disturbed by my wife coming home, could possibly have made off with a lot more than they did.

I have heard of this happening to someone else as well.

After this I put up the Spanish type burglar bars on all the windows and security gates on all the doors.

Be careful Citanul and hoping I'm not being too paranoid.

Citanul 2014-02-06 12:03

That is a good point, but they wouldn't have seen anything else. They only ransacked the one room, and the other rooms with expensive items in were left untouched - the doors were still closed, and if they had opened them then the alarm would have gone off as those rooms have infrared sensors (and I'm going to get a sensor installed in the room that was broken into as soon as possible).

So the only things they saw were what was in that room, and while there are still items in there that cost quite a bit - bass guitar and amp, exercise bike, a large CD collection, Lego models, none of those are particularly easy to make off with, and there's not a big market for them (especially not the music I listen to :D). Ironically, the one item I wouldn't have minded them taking - a digital clock/radio that I don't really like because the display is way too bright even on the dim setting - they left.

So your concern is noted, and I'm certainly not ignoring it, but I don't think they will be back.

Sandtonman 2014-02-06 18:39
..... but by chance they picked the one room that doesn't have an infrared sensor and they got in my removing an entire pane of glass from a window which doesn't open - if they'd opened any of the windows then the alarm would have gone off.

.......the doors were still closed, and if they had opened them then the alarm would have gone off as those rooms have infrared sensors.......
I hate to disturb you further but from what you say in these quotes Citanul, they had clearly knowledge of the layout of your house and alarm system and were happy to take the less expensive items without setting off the alarm.

Either an inside job -- maid, gardener, decorator, TV installer, carpet layer, tipped off the baddies; else some other service provider you've used in the last 3-months.

Do upgrade the alarm and do suspect that they may come back for the good stuff! It often happens so please take precautions.

Cheers, K.

Citanul 2014-02-07 09:10
Either an inside job -- maid, gardener, decorator, TV installer, carpet layer, tipped off the baddies; else some other service provider you've used in the last 3-months.
It can't have been. We don't have a maid, and haven't had any decorators or service providers come in for over a year. We do have someone who occasionally works in the garden but he never comes into the house and we've known him for years.

He also works regularly for other people with more expensive items than us and they've never had an incident. While you obviously can never be absolutely sure that someone is completely trustworthy, it's extremely unlikely (almost to the point of impossibility) that he was involved.

It's the one bedroom at the back of the house, so it's not visible from the road and we think they just took a chance and helped themselves when they discovered that no alarm went off. When they opened the bedroom door they would have seen the alarm keypad (with the red light indicating that it was armed), so we suspect that they didn't venture out into the passage in case there happened to be a sensor there.

There's just no conceivable way that anyone could know that there was no sensor in that bedroom. Guests have no reason to go in there, and the only people who have been into the house in the past year are family and friends, and in any case it's only immediate family who know the alarm setup.

Everything points to it being them knowing the house was unoccupied and taking a chance. A similar sort of thing has happened before - someone tried to get into the front bedroom by smashing a window, but the alarm went off so they didn't take anything then. This time they just happened to find a way of getting in that didn't set the alarm off.

Sandtonman 2014-02-07 11:19
It can't have been......
Cool, I'm very glad you are well covered in this respect. I made the comment because I'm not a big believer in coincidence and had an almost identical experience at our old family home. We'd recently had some trees reduced and the workers were left alone with an undisturbed view around the whole exterior of the house in in through all the windows.
Cheers and have a great weekend. K.

Optimist 2014-02-07 11:27

Reminds me of an incident years ago;

We had a few builders in to put a new, bigger bath in for us in the one bathroom. My electric shaver went missing...

Knowing it was obviously them (2 workers present at the time) I confronted them but only got denials and anger from the one who was clearly over-reacting.
They agreed to emptying their pockets, but to no avail.
It was handled as tactfully as possible by me but was still most unpleasant.
The next day we found a part of the shaver buried in the rubble outside.

The thing is we HAD been keeping a close eye on them in the first place...

Me thinks that perhaps the Forum King's subjects are revolting? (You can take that anyway you like as long as someone starts posting again).

I know we aren't supposed to post about DStv movies here but I'm going to do so anyway. Who watched the movie Silver Linings Playbook which was screened on Sunday night? In the adverts for the movie they play the song Hey Ho by a group who, I think, are called The Luminaires. Yet this song doesn't appear in the movie itself. Think I need to watch the trailer again and listen to how much of the song they actually play there.

Optimist, I'm still trying to figure out what I AM DOING HERE so where's your comments about not being in good taste come from? :D

Bring on the comments and insults. It's basically what I'm all about. Think they will have to be pretty bad before I take any offence.:)

Citanul 2014-02-15 12:13
Question: What would your contribution be to the group in a Zombie apocalypse?
That's a tough one. I'm not the most athletic or practical person around, and my main ability - an affinity for numbers and maths wouldn't be too useful.

But I have read and watched quite a lot of post-apocalyptic stories, so I guess I'd be useful at advising when something's a bad idea (like splitting the party up).

Think I'd possibly be able to bore them to death? Although, seeing that they are already dead, this may not be practical. Guess I won't be any use to any of you. Sorry. RIP!!:o

Eurica 2014-02-16 19:19

I don't think our group will survive for very long.
I had a dream last night that the apocalypse happened but we had a generator and where able to still watch DStv. Very sporting of them to continue broadcasting while zombies are attaching we thought.:D

Oh and in other news....
The thunder and lightning in the skies interfering with my infrared headphones!
Please send this down to Cape Town but let some rain accompany the thunder and lightning. It's been a scorcher today and was pretty hot yesterday as well.

Going outside now to do a rain dance which hopefully will bring not only rain but some snow as well. For tonight's bath I'll be taking my soap with me and jumping into my pool. Last I looked the water was over 30 degrees which, for me anyway, is too hot for a swimming pool's water.

JeanP 2014-02-17 09:05

yes please sent some to JHB too

I'm also finding I've got too much to watch, again, will have to narrow my choices further. *sigh*

Dennis: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
Arthur: Be quiet!
Dennis: Well, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
Arthur: Shut up!
Dennis: I mean, if I went 'round saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

LONG LIVE THE SUPREME EMPEROR!!!

The King has let his position go to his head and has become a dictator. His Queen has become a twitterati, or is that simply a ....... 'twit'?:D and has to a large extent abandoned her subjects.

Now to see how long the Supreme Emperor can withstand any sort of fightback that the King and Queen may plot against him and his followers.

WE ARE MARCHING ON THE LOUNGE!! (PS. please see the fridge is stocked with some beers. Thanks).

Hey, moderator gotta eat yo...

Sandtonman 2014-03-02 09:51

Carlos and Cleggy!

Very horse indeed this morning!

What a terrific show last night at Soccer City -- even the rain held off !

Johnny Clegg got the crowd going with an hour-long set of all his best known numbers. Cleggy was at his vocal best and, as always, his supporting band was excellent. Clearly less agile than back in the day, there was a total absence of the dancing that we have come to expect. Despite this he was as good as ever!

Carlos came on stage promptly at 8:30; I was nervous that he might launch into a set of unknown "new stuff" as has been the criticism on other tours. No fear of that, however. The 2-hour set, with an absolutely stunning (polished and totally professional) 9 piece band, included just about all of his classic Latin-rock originals and covers. Jingo Lo Ba, Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va, She's not there, Maria Maria, to name just a few. There was only one track that I did not know well.

Sound quality and mix was very good; loud but NOT too loud (my ears rang for 3-days after seeing the Who at Wembley back in 1979. My hearing has never quite recovered)

The stage design and lighting were also excellent. Attractive, modern and varied; but not too busy, as is sometimes the case these days.

Great video work on the 3 big screens showing close-ups of the band from all angles, using static as well as hand-held cameras; mixed with classic footage of Carlos over a 45-year band history, over which time he has continued to reinvent himself, in a way only surpassed by Neil Young (IMHO).

He topped the concert off by inviting Cleggy on stage to perform with him. They did a back-to-back Zulu and Latin American number to which the crowd rose.

Marred (just very slightly) IMHO by a couple of mini-lectures about world peace, love, poverty, The Dali lama, Desmond Tutu, philanthropists, (Buffet , Gates, Branson), the Pope, Tutu again; it was a terrific evening. After all Carlos Santana is an original 60s artist who performed at Woodstock and whose music sounds as fresh today as it did back in 1969. As a surviving 60's rock god, I suppose he's entitled to lecture on peace and love!

Cheers, K.

beetle bailey 2014-03-03 10:26

Sandtonman, one of the oldest "rockers" in the country. ;)

Pleased that you enjoyed the show. Strangely enough I'm not a big Santana fan although admittedly the only song of his that I know of is "Black Magic Woman". A song that I do like by the way.

How big a following does Santana have amongst the "younger" generation seeing as how I don't think much of his music gets radio or tv play these days. Or do I just listen to the wrong channels?

Citanul 2014-03-03 10:38
How big a following does Santana have amongst the "younger" generation seeing as how I don't think much of his music gets radio or tv play these days. Or do I just listen to the wrong channels?
I don't know about more recently, but he had a big comeback in the late 90s, hitting on the very successful formula of teaming up with other artists who would write and perform on his albums. He got quite a bit of airplay and won a number of Grammys, so he's probably managed to secure quite a following from the younger generation, both amongst those who listen to what's popular and those who have an inclination towards older music.

Sandtonman 2014-03-03 10:49
......How big a following does Santana have amongst the "younger" generation ......?
The audience was +-75% old time classic-rockers like me; But there was around 25% of "youngsters" say 20-40 age group.

Citanul is quite correct that Carlos has performed with young musicians over the years; specifically the Supernatural album released in 1999, earned him a lot of younger fans and was massively successful

From a population perspective the audience was around 70% white with the balance being made up mainly from the Indian community.

Anyway it was a splendid evening enjoyed by all.
Cheers, K.

Thanks Citanul and Sandtonman. Don't know when last I've been to a live show like the one Sandtonman went to. There are some artists who have toured here recently that I wouldn't have minded going to see, U2, The Hollies, Bruce Springsteen but not at the prices charged. Also, as in the case of the Hollies for example, I'm not too certain how many of the original members would have actually been in the group?

I'm probably being a bit pedantic here, but it's not necessarily the original members that you want to see.

For example, the Moody Blues toured South Africa two years ago, and the drummer is the only original member who's left. However, that original line-up only lasted one album and it was the subsequent line-up who had the most success, and three out of five of that "classic" line-up are still in the band.

I would agree that I wouldn't expect to see the full original line up of any of the sixties groups but would like to see at least a couple of the main members. Moody Blues without Justin Hayward as an example just wouldn't be the same.

Have also read somewhere that UB40, I think it was, are also coming to South Africa yet the original band says that this isn't, or shouldn't be called, UB40 as only one member of the band was originally with them.

Think not too long ago the Beach Boys toured here as well and the only original member was Mike Love?

Citanul 2014-03-04 09:24
I would agree that I wouldn't expect to see the full original line up of any of the sixties groups but would like to see at least a couple of the main members.
With any group I think there are certain key members who are integral to the band while there are others who can be replaced fairly easily. The Eagles toured South Africa without Don Felder and Bon Jovi came with Richie Sambora and I don't think anybody really cared.

In general the key member is going to be the singer as they're really what makes the band identifiable, although there are obviously example of groups changing the singer and being more successful or at least not significant less successful. It becomes a little trickier with group like the Beach Boys and the Hollies who had multiple singers (I think - I'm not that familiar with either band), so sometimes the current touring line-up can be a little disappointing to long term fans.
Sjoe. And I thought programming "Nikki the Robot" in Turbo Pascal on an XT was old school...
I had a lot of fun programming in Turbo Pascal and it's probably still one of my favourites out of all the languages I've programmed in, even though I haven't used it in years. I remember having a lot of unfinished programs - I'd have some sort of grand idea, make a start and sometimes even get it to a reasonable working stage, before losing interest and starting something else.

Optimist 2014-03-06 10:22

The only way to get finished was to stubbornly stay up all night & see the sun come up (and then all too often one had forgotten to save and had a power failure).

My favourite was Basic, very powerful for such a language as it progressed and what I ended up using in some business. Didn't like Pascal, too unfriendly, although never tried the modern :p Turbo Pascal version.
As for machine code and the like, very interesting and deep but painful.

If you guys think my experiences are old, wait for Geoff to arrive... probably had to assemble his own device using valves :D

Not quite but close -----

As a student I was given the task to increase the memory of a computer from 4 bytes to 4 kbytes ---- by manually wiring magnetic core memory. The next project was to build a real time clock for a Varian computer. The next one we took on as a group project was to build a "real time compiler" which involved using a storage scope as a monitor. This one turned into a "word processor" which we then used to complete our theses --- everyone else was using the Universities " tryping department" for their manuscripts.

It involved writing and building what today is called a "Driver" for an ancient printer as well. Actualy that is not true, we "converted" a telex machine into a printer. ( 8 - 5 code conversion and all)

Not to talk of developing a system to transfer s/w off 32 stiffies/floppies onto a single (one of the first) "hard drives" and then installing from that instead.

Triggered by the same Lotus software MC Nic was talking about.

The first gaming computer in my home was an "Atari" - I still have the monitor for that one connected to a simple ancient "computer" at home.

We could not purchase computers at work, so we bought " equipment controllers" instead. They were Olliveti units. We bought them as " components" and assembled them ourselves and then they ended up on peoples desk running " super calc" I then developed a word processor which I called "run-on" because it would occassionally runaway with whatever the last keystroke was and could not be stopped until the storage was full, at which time it would "freeze" and reboot, losing all your work for you..... ( you heard that before, memory leak and all that ...) Took a while to fix but in the end found a way around a hardware limitation and then reaned the word processor run -off - beacause it could run-off as many versionsas you could possibly want.

BTW the version of "supercalc" we had was able to only add hor and vertically, nothing else.

Geoff D 2014-03-11 20:57

The only thing that is important is not to run more than one antivirus package at a time

Optimist 2014-03-11 20:58

My prob with AVG is that it became bulky, trying to elbow its way into other areas of protection and without offering the ability to control that enough.

Microsoft Essentials' anti-virus works well (but will now be on its way out for XP ).

I used to bee a Nortons bigot then it let me down by not recognising the Skype Trojan about 18 months ago and I ended up rebuilding my entire machine from a format.

It also became expensive, so I purchased AVG Internet security and PC Tune-up. I've been using this combination since.

It has declared a couple of false positives; rather that than missing real issues!

Cheers, K
It has declared a couple of false positives; rather that than missing real issues!
True, but at one point it actually interfered with my use of some still fairly mainstream software. Not that that's necessarily an AVG issue alone, I've seen other protection suites do the same.

BTW, try registering on AVG's forum, they didn't even bother to get back to me re my registration :(
(Although nor did MC initially in Dec 2008, yet look how that changed and where it's led to... ;))

Citanul 2014-03-12 08:55

At work it's Trend Micro OfficeScan as that's what my company uses, while on my home computer it's AVG Free. I switched to it when I thought I had a virus but Norton which I had at the time didn't report anything. I installed AVG, it picked up and eliminated the virus and I've used it ever since then.

I hear that worldwide bank groups are moaning at Microsoft about the expense of upgrading their ATM's software beyond XP, apparently some sort of plan is being negotiated.

Just strengthens my point, nothing wrong with progress but if it works more than well enough why discontinue it?
I suppose it's a matter of what profits there are to be made... :( surely a way can be found, I would happily pay a small maintenance fee. *sigh*

EDIT: There's something called Win 365 which offers older software at a yearly renewal (and much cheaper) price. I don't know if that's just for MS Office or if it includes XP, or if individuals can use that, but it makes a lot of sense. People are familiar with XP, don't want to pay for more upgrading of other software for a new OS, and so on.

Well the newer version of Office interaction with SharePoint and the services it offers like multiple user working on the same spreadsheet or document may not apply to you but to many it does or would be great if they knew they could. IE11 offers a lot more of functionality and bandwidth saving with only refreshing certain parts of page. Maybe Firefox does it ok for the sites you visit but when using functionality from Office and Office365 services like SharePoint then you are not going to get all the functionality. It's your choice but know you are limiting yourself and anyone else who reads the thread needs to be informed too of the danagers, including the security improvements made in both the OS and browser.

Optimist 2014-03-16 14:34

Then I think we now agree in a sense, there's room for both types of needs and people should keep themselves aware of all the fine points. :-)

Security... it's done to cover every possible issue worldwide, most will never see the light of day in any one individual's experience. Yes, the more protection the better, but it can never be foolproof anyway of course.

I suppose at some point it starts to become impractical to continue supporting it. There would be costs associated with the continued support and so Microsoft must have decided that the costs are now too great. XP was released over 12 years ago (and they stopped selling it 5 years ago), so it has had a good run - was anyone still using any version of MS-DOS 12 years after its release?

Optimist 2014-03-17 09:31

Good points, Citanul.
My beef is actually with Win 7, taken off the market far too quickly and now we've even got Win 9 trying to elbow in. :(

I spoke to a colleague this morning, like most others I've heard from there is a distinct dislike for 8.1 which this guy equated to the GUI for XBox.
More than that, I and so many others can't currently afford all the basic & "hidden" expenses involved, couldn't with Win 7 either.
Fortunately these days the needs of both my and my most direct associates' businesses aren't that sophisticated s/w wise. I'm seriously considering Ubuntu, but although more flexible and long serving there are limitation with that.

I've been around town, among other things I used to be both a technical manager and IT Officer for a couple of senior companies which included h/w & s/w support so I know the game, these days the economy says otherwise so hoping for some good alternatives to develop...

At least 8.1 is a bit better than 8 with the introduction of something resembling a Start menu and the ability to boot straight to the desktop, but I still don't like it. It seems like it's the odd numbers that are the best when it comes to Windows versions, which is the opposite to the Star Trek movies. :)

Let's be honest here...Saying "At least 8.1 is better than 8" is really like saying "I have TB, which is better than having Extremely Drug Resistant TB".

The whole "Windows 8 experience" was broken when they tried to shoe-horn a touch-based OS onto PCs and call it "revolutionary". It's like Windows CE all over again, only in reverse.

It may be faster/snappier, but when the user experience is horrible that kind of defeats the object.

*drops mic*

yes actually, and it is STILL used today ....

Have a close look at some of the routines you all use everyday and those that know MSDOS tell me that these routines are not MSDOS routines.

No jokes, my main business XP PC's motherboard has just packed up on me, so I'm done with this conversation in case it's causing someone to curse me :p

*sigh* so no longer considering, actually now having to make a plan. Anyone got a spare Win 7 32-bit pack to sell me? :(

That's basically exactly what happened Geoff... it had done an offered latest update while switching off, next time I tried to turn on it was dead.

How did you guess that, are you a magician?

beetle bailey 2014-03-18 09:55

From what I've been reading here am I correct in assuming that the XP version is no longer going to be supported by Microsoft? I have Security Essentials as my anti virus so if the above is correct then it would mean I'd have to change from Security Essentials to something new?

Is this really all that would be affected on my computer? Don't think I've ever had a software update done, unless this is done when the anti virus is updated. Also, to date, had no reason to contact Microsoft for any XP issues so that side of things doesn't bother me.

Seem to remember reading somewhere a couple of weeks ago about this situation but that there had been a rethink on this matter and alternatives were being looked at by Microsoft?

Yep, that's exactly what is happening BB. :(

You'll need to find a replacement anti virus at the least, but longer term at least for wider security you'll have to consider an upgrade.

Geoff D 2014-03-18 10:06
That's basically exactly what happened Geoff... it had done an offered latest update while switching off, next time I tried to turn on it was dead.

How did you guess that, are you a magician?
No that is what happened to me! one of those "recommended updates" basically does something that is NOT compatible with older Hardware, but because in my case there were so many of them it is now very hard to find it even if you can get your PC to reboot to be able to "reverse" it.

I am using that PC now as an opportuntity to really get to grips with how MS thinks -------

So now do you still believe it was not triggered by MS? I will grant you that it was not malicious but done because even the MS Gurus do not always keep track of everything they do. Equals an unintended self destruct routine or Silver Bullet!

If you have a "restore CD" for the laptop still, you may be able to recover, BUT it means ALL the updates done since inception will be lost .........

So ........ we are all caught between a rock and a hard place.

Optimist 2014-03-18 10:13

Oh hell !!!!
Ja I wouldn't put it past them, and other anomalies of late add to the "evidence"...

But we can never really prove that kind of behaviour, and either way we're stuck with it ! :(

I'm going to put my transplant idea I mentioned privately to you on hold, PLEASE keep me up to date with your findings.

This is believe it or not the first time I'm ever going to use the angry smiley... (I normally consider anger to be a very self-destructive emotion)!

Be very very careful about now trying to do a last minute s/w update! It will probably prove fatal. And the problem is you will not know until it is too late ------- and if you then take your PC in for repair, the repair desk will tell you anything between a HDD failure, battery failure or Motherboard failure, when all it is one or more of the "updates" that is not compatible with the older hardware.

Optimist 2014-03-18 10:36

The chances of this not being malicious are slim IMO. How often must we believe in "coincidences".
IF they later offer an admission, apology and fix, then ok.

The only possible excuse I can imagine is that they got careless due to lack of interest in a "dying" product, so then maybe... but it's too convenient...

We need serious competition to MS, I've been saying that for decades.
Maybe time to examine Apple's OS's? I know next to nothing about them.

Interesting... I thought the style of Fred was rather similar to the king, and had MC Nic on my list of Mastermind suspects.

Glad that's somewhat sorted out, what I'm interested in is getting past these "power" games which I firmly believe most don't want in a lounge... tried to say it one way or another to the king a few times, but he enjoys it...

Whatever the future fate of "the lounge" if it does need a Mod my first choice would be Sir Nic.
Glad that's somewhat sorted out, what I'm interested in is getting past these "power" games which I firmly believe most don't want in a lounge...
I have to agree with you on this - I think there's the danger of carrying these sorts of in-jokes too far. They're bound to happen in an thread like this one, but too many and it's going to drive people away. The Lounge is supposed to be a thread where forumites can discuss anything not related to DStv, but if they come into the thread and just see pages of posts related to the Forum King and Queen and the Mastermind then there's a good chance they'll turn their tails and run.

I'm not saying avoid in-jokes completely as I think fostering a sense of community is a good thing and that's one way of doing it, but it might be worth cutting back on them and discussing other things.

So to that end, here's an attempt to get a discussion started: What book are you currently reading?

I'm busy with Existence by David Brin. I've enjoyed his other books, especially the Uplift series, but this one's just not clicking with me. I'm not at the point where I'm going to give up on it, but it's starting to become a bit of a slog to read.
.........here's an attempt to get a discussion started: What book are you currently reading?

I don't know David Brin, Citanul; will check him out.

I am currently reading The Church of Fear, by John Sweeney, the Panorama reporter. It's an exposť about the "church" of Scientology. Fascinating content and an easy read, considering the topic.

Not something I'd seek out; but it was offered me on Amazon as a 99p (may have been 1.99) daily download offer.

So, here's an added angle to this interesting discussion topic.

Who still goes out and buys paper books?
Who uses a tablet or e-reader?

Do those who have moved to a tablet or e-reader read more, or less, than previously? And to what extent do they experiment with new authors?

I no longer buy paper books; except those with maps, detailed diagrams or many pictures which need to be frequently referred back to. This forward-backward paging is difficult on an e-reader and easy in a printed book.

Otherwise, I read much more from Amazon Kindle than I previously did with paper books.

I take "blind" chances on purchases of a couple of quid. I also subscribe to the UK "Telegraph" daily. It's ten quid a month and well worth it. I read it up the gym for around 90 minutes on the cross-trainer, daily. Time just flies.

I also pre-order books from my favourite holiday-read (UK Summer) authors such as Peter James and Stephen Leather; so their new releases pop down to our linked Kindle devices (4) on release date. "One Click" purchases! I just love it :)

What about others' reading patterns? Paper books or e-readers???

Cheers, K.

beetle bailey 2014-04-03 09:42

On the book thread if you like detective type stories then look for books by Michael Connelly, Stephen Leather - although I've just finished reading Nightfall which was a complete removal from his normal type of books and one which I never truly enjoyed, and you may care to give Jo Nesbo books a try. Nelson de Mille also writes some decent stuff.

So at the moment I'm between books having just finished the Stephen Leather one and having a Michael Connelly book waiting for me to get started on. Title of this one is The Scarecrow.

Optimist 2014-04-03 09:43

I'm definitely old school here, nothing like the feel of a paperback in one's hands IMHO... but sadly I've not done much fictional reading for a long time, just ever on-going study material.

Having been a somewhat disappointed Scientology member for just a month or so about 3 decades ago  I'll definitely be looking out for that book K, thanks!

Sandtonman 2014-04-03 10:10
......... Stephen Leather - although I've just finished reading Nightfall which was a complete removal from his normal type of books and one which I never truly enjoyed........
Agreed bb; and the subsequent book in the same series, Midnight, I gave up on. I think there are around 4 or 5 in the "Jack Nightingale" series now. But not for me :(

Conversely the Dan "Spider" Shepherd series of novels is possibly my reading high-point of each year.

Also check out Spider Shepherd short stories: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=stephen+leather+short+stories&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Astephen+leather+short+stories Unsure if these are available in printed form?

New Spider Shepherd eagerly awaited, anticipated for around July.

Cheers, K.

However, I did recently buy a Kindle as I'm heading to the USA soon and I thought it was worth getting one to take with me, especially as I have trouble sleeping on planes so I may need something to occupy myself. I haven't actually bought anything for it though as science fiction publisher Baen Books have made a number of their books available for free download, which I've made use of. I'm not that familiar with too many of the authors but you can't argue with free stuff. :)

beetle bailey 2014-04-03 19:51

Belong to the local Library, so that's where I get my reading material from. Wouldn't mind an e-book reader but it's not top of my list of items I really want. Quite satisfied with the print medium.

Yes I buy paper books - still cannot get used to this business of relying on power to be able to "read"
Yes I use a tablet and an e-reader, but only when other options are not available.
No I do not experiment with new writers as a result of specials from kindle etc, No I do not read more because of having access to e-readers they are super usefull when reading reports, technical texts reference material because of the ease of making notes, entering bookmarks, comments and creating cross references, so for work, brialliant tool but for pleasure?

Nothing replaces a book for reading in bed or in the home library. A book on a plane works better for me than a tablet, except when working, a tablet has the edge over a laptop

Optimist 2014-04-05 14:06

So what's next? Maybe what cars we have / desire?

For the ladies, maybe their favourite sewing machine or something, I honestly don't know what makes them tick with these subjects :D:o

beetle bailey 2014-04-05 17:16

Ah the sewing machine. A Singer for me. The one where you get the needle moving by moving your feet on the base like thingy which turns the wheel by means of a fan belt and gets the needle to go up and down thereby stitching something together. In this way I'd get some exercise for my feet instead of sitting in front of the tv all day and getting fat(ter) around the waist. Would however need to learn how to use this as I have no idea how to sew. And intend to keep it like that.

Favourite car? Always joke with the family about wanting an Audi A4 but in all honesty it's too big for my needs. Think I'd settle for a Toyota Corolla even though it's not much smaller than the Audi.

What's the point of wanting a Lamboghini, Ferrari and the like when we are limited to driving no faster than 120km.h on our freeways. (Not that I'm against this speed limit).

My folks still have one of those, fun to play with :)

As for the a4, got one last year, best investment ever! :D

Optimist 2014-04-05 17:41

Speed limits are necessary, but it doesn't mean we can't still have fun. As long as I can still give a Golf GTi upstart a whack I'm satisfied :D

Got myself a classic in great condition at a real bargain, a British-built Honda CRX sports coupe, pre-modified with a free flow exhaust which was pretty much the standard.
As my insurance company see it as a classic themselves I've even still got comprehensive insurance for it!

I was once a passenger in a friend's Ferrari in which he dared to do 260+ , have to say that was far too much for me and I found extremely reckless despite its excellent ability to deal with it (and his I suppose...)
Funny thing is, I preferred his Porche as far as feel goes, much more exciting than the other "tame" beast goes. So one of them might be fun to have for a while, but I'm a happy chappie

*sneaks off :o*

To change subject and not knowing where to post it but can someone tell me if they are also receiving some advert type thing on their computer when scrolling through the different threads?

Comes up on the left hand side, as I look at it, of my screen and has the headings: Related Searches: Internet Forum Software, A New Post, Forum Software, Free Hosting etc etc.

Is this part of the new Forum set up? If so why are there headings like Online Bachelor Degree, Upgrade My Phone, BUY GOLD AND SILVER?

I click on the small x at the top of this "advert" and the thing goes away only to return when I go to another page on the Forum. Please, if this is part of the new setup kindly take another look at how this operates. Thanks.

Edit> Have clicked on a couple of the items mentioned and they all take me to a site known as Topic Torch and then each one advertises lots of other sites that one can go to. Similar to a Google search.

MC Marietjie 2014-04-07 11:01

@beetle bailey - we haven't made any changes on the Forum yet, so what you are describing sounds like browser or internet service provider related advertising. Definitely not from our side.

Eurica 2014-04-07 11:11

BB mine did the same until I added AdBlock. That took it away.

Was just about to delete my post as I've noticed this 'intrusion' is showing on other internet sites as well. But now that I've seen the reply of Eurica's I'll leave it and see if others are also having this problem.

Adblock? How can one get this and how does it work? In other words for someone like me. Those books, Computers for Dummies and all the other Dummy like books were written expressly for me. :D

Toemaar without Google to look up everything I would be useless as well! :p

I use Google Chrome as a search engine and that has a thing called AdBlock. So if you Google 'AdBlock for Chrome' it will give you results for downloads. That's what I did. :) Hope that helps.

Maybe one of the clever people here can explain it better. :o

Congratulations on your 40th Wedding Anniversary when it comes round on the 20th of this month. Hoping and praying that your wife will be able to put up with you for many more years yet.

Eurica, sorry your's never worked out but at least you are now in control of your tv remote. :D

Celebrated, if that is the right word, our wedding anniversary on the 2nd of March. Been together for 46 years.

That's the important stuff. (The bits before the last sentence above)

Regarding my earlier problem firstly thanks for all the advice. You guys, and gals, really are a great bunch and always so very helpful to me. Truly to all of you THANKS.

Following the advice given here I downloaded the Ad-aware Free Anti virus Application and did a full scan on my computer. Picked up a couple, well a number actually, of viruses but I never investigated just what they all were. Followed the prompt and told the system to do a clean up. Unfortunately, when I came back to the Forum that aggravating problem that started all this was still there. Did the Adblock download and this seemed to do the trick.

When doing the full scan of the computer it took a good few hours to complete. Very VERY slow. Could be that the problem is that I still have the Microsoft Security Essentials still running. Will, sometime over the weekend, get my son, or son-in-law to come shut it down.

Once again thanks for all the help.

Team effort works well :)

Ad-Aware will take ages to do the full scan, it's very thorough. I actually stopped using it though due to the same kind of issues - MS Security Essentials (which I wanted to keep for my own reasons, not an important choice IMO).
So I can't say how good AA's anti-virus is, but I'm sure it's fine.

Windows Security issues.....

Here we go again....

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-27184188

Cheers, K.

Optimist 2014-04-28 12:36

Thanks Keith.
XP impact
However, the issue may be of special concern to people still using the Windows XP operating system.
That is because Microsoft ended official support for that system earlier this month.
It means there will be no more official security updates and bug fixes for XP from the firm.
Cyber security firm Symantec said it had carried out tests which confirmed that "the vulnerability crashes Internet Explorer on Windows XP".
"This will be the first zero day vulnerability that will not be patched for Windows XP users," it added.
About 30% of all desktops are thought to be still running Windows XP and analysts have previously warned that those users would be vulnerable to attacks from cyber-thieves.
Microsoft has suggested businesses and consumers still using the system should upgrade to a newer alternative.
How the industries twist things to suit their appetites

MS are still offering everyone with XP many essential security updates until July next year.
It has never been possible to detect anything near all vulnerabilities, nor is most protection ever needed by any one individual (but that's not an excuse). Using a 3rd party browser solves many of these concerns.

What MS is refusing to acknowledge is that most users worldwide are satisfied, on XP their PCs work fast enough and the software on offer does more than enough for many, many users, plus there's economic considerations...

Methinks this will lead to a boost in Ubuntu interest. All people want is a reasonable middle market, we shouldn't all have to go with the upper market flow to get what we need. ;)

The King has been having a deep relationship with the books.
King has been studying very Hard
King got the Highest mark for the test and was the only one that meet the requirements to pass which is 80%.

beetle bailey 2014-05-02 17:13

Congratulations to the King on getting such good marks in his exam(s). Well done.

Eurica, hope you enjoyed your stay in the best part of the country and have a safe and enjoyable trip home. Did you go diving with the sharks at Gansbaai?

Optimist 2014-05-02 18:24

Just quickly back to that latest general / XP vulnerability issue, M$ (Micro$oft) offered a specific fix to all with XP. The responsible thing to do IMHO.

Congrats Frosy! :)

Just been watching a science program on 180 made by Discovery themselves, so I trust this info - apparently there's now a tentative date set for people to be sent to Mars,
in 2037 :cool::cool:

I presume this is NASA supplied info, does anyone know more about this?

No diving with sharks for me! I did watch the crazy people do it. I have a picture of the boats with the cages. Will post when back home.

but I need to have animals for the Game Farm :D.

Lets talk about networks :p.
I find the OSI model very fascinating.

Eurica 2014-05-12 18:03

I have to tell you all this story just to highlight how little some people actually know about their decoders.

We stay over at my sister's in-laws when we where down in the cape.

They watch only three channels (KykNet, DiscoveryID, SS1 and some news channel - not one off which I normally watch) even though they have premium. So the only time we could watch anything was after they went to bed.

The second night I watched a bit when the others went to bed. The following morning the lady caught me immediately after I woke up in a slight panic saying something about the decorder being broken. (This had me a bit worried as I was the last one to use it) According to her there was no picture just that it was searching for signal and the channel number was gone having been replaced by the time.

Yes for some reason (could have been the wine) I placed the decoder in standby. She had no idea one could do that.

:D

Optimist 2014-05-12 18:20

Actually I envy them, it's quite a job trying to catch all the good stuff on all the channels - is simpler maybe better?...

Eurica 2014-05-12 18:33

I hardly ever venture out to the channels. Catch Up keeps me busy

I almost never check the schedules or flip through channels. I trust the channel people on Twitter to keep me informed. But it is not fool proof. I missed the first episode of the new Jon Oliver show. Didn't even know about it. Caught it by change on my Walka yesterday morning.

Optimist 2014-05-12 18:38
